Angles of the Sun
Before we can design our outdoor classroom we had to learn about solar energy and how the sun and earth's tilt affects our weather. Earth's axis of spin is always 23.5*. As earth's orbit shifts our weather changes. The part of earth that's closer to the sun has warmer weather making it summer and the part of earth that's further away has colder weather making it winter. Because of this the equator is the warmest place year round. To test how the sun affects earth we did an experiment where we took a flashlight and put it the same distance, but with different angles from the paper. We found that there is always the same amount of light but spread over different areas of the paper.
There are three different types of heat transfer. Conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is heat transfer through solid (not all solids are equally good at transferring heat). Convection is heat transfer through a fluid (liquid or gas). Radiation is heat transfer through waves/ rays/ particles. After heat is transferred insulation is used to keep that heat. Insulation is the opposite of conduction making it bad at transferring heat. Less denser materials make better insulators.
Laws of Thermodynamics
0th Law- This law explains temperature. If two systems are in thermal equilibrium with a third system, then they are in equilibrium with each other. Example: A=B and B=C so.. A=C
1st Law- This law is about conservation of energy. Energy is neither created nor destroyed, but transferred from one form to another.(Heat is a form of energy)
2nd Law- This law describes that entropy increases and disorder decreases. Over time everything becomes the same temperature.
3rd Law- This law talks about temperature. Temperature can never get to absolute zero because heat always exists.
